History

In 1907, Heinrich Henkel and Florentin Grosse joined forces to found “Henkel & Grosse” in Pforzheim, a town known as the center of the German jewelry and watch-making industry. Ever since, the Grosse family has built over 100 years of tradition and heritage in jewelry making.

How to protect jewelry from tarnishing

Understanding why silver jewellery can tarnish

The tarnish on silver jewellery is the result of oxidative reactions with sulphur, such as hydrogen-sulphide, in the air and other environmental influences.

Jewellery cannot be fully protected against the oxidation of silver, especially when strongly attacked by environmental impacts.

The corrosion of gold-plated silver combined with sulphur creates the darkening called tarnish. Any moisture, dirt, olils or other resiudal chemicals will cause and accelerate the tarnishing. High humidity levels, air pollution and contact with chemicals found in deodorant, hairspray, lotions, prefume and bleach can also cause tarnishing.

Avoid jewellery pieces can touch each other causing sratches and damage which accelerate oxidation.

How to treat and store gold-plated and silver jewellery

  • avoid exposing to direct sunlight
  • avoid hot light spots or other hot lighting systems (modern LED lamps can avoid excessive heat)
  • avoid temperature above 40°C
  • avoid contact with chlorine from cleaning detergent or chlorine-treated water
  • leathers can contain chemicals which causes tarnishing
  • perfumes, creams, lotions and make-up all contain substances that can attack plated jewellery
  • certain fruits and vegetables as well as sweat are acidic
  • high humidity or air from the sea-side, saturated with salt should be avoided
  • rinse under cold water every night and dry with a soft jewellery towel
