Understanding why silver jewellery can tarnish
The tarnish on silver jewellery is the result of oxidative reactions with sulphur, such as hydrogen-sulphide, in the air and other environmental influences.
Jewellery cannot be fully protected against the oxidation of silver, especially when strongly attacked by environmental impacts.
The corrosion of gold-plated silver combined with sulphur creates the darkening called tarnish. Any moisture, dirt, olils or other resiudal chemicals will cause and accelerate the tarnishing. High humidity levels, air pollution and contact with chemicals found in deodorant, hairspray, lotions, prefume and bleach can also cause tarnishing.
Avoid jewellery pieces can touch each other causing sratches and damage which accelerate oxidation.
